COST of the AMENDMENT

The amendment instructs the ASI board to determine and appropriate sufficient funds to operate the department, but it does not specify how much that amount is. The Board has flexibility to make a reasonable assessment as long as it fulfills the mandate of the bylaw to see that the department operates as specified. The structures of the judiciary department can be operated inexpensively.

Keep in mind that CSU Long Beach ASI manages about 5 million dollars per year and has a vibrant, fully staffed ASI government including a full judiciary exactly like the one proposed here. CSU Sacramento, in contrast, manages over 10 million dollars annually, has a relatively small and closed, inactive and ineffective student government, and no judicary.

While it could be run on less, the author believes that a minimum of about $30,000 per year would be needed to run the judiciary (about $1 per student). The amendment specifies that after creation the judiciary officers would submit budget requests each year to the board outlining their necessary expenses.
